Jaqueline Cristian entered the main draw following a withdrawal. Gabriela Ruse and Anca Todoni received wild cards from the organizers.
Three more Romanian players will compete for the grand trophy at the Transylvania Open WTA 250, alongside Ana Bogdan (66 WTA)! Jaqueline Cristian (84 WTA), Gabriela Ruse (140 WTA), a finalist in the previous edition of the tournament, and Anca Todoni (243 WTA) have made it to the main draw. Jaqueline advanced to the main draw due to the withdrawal of Anna Kalinskaya, while the other two players received wild cards from the organizers.
The fourth edition of the Transylvania Open, recognized as the best WTA 250 tennis tournament in the world for two consecutive years, will take place in Cluj-Napoca from February 3 to 11. The Cluj tournament has four wild cards allocated for the main singles draw and four for the qualifiers. The latter were granted to the players: Miriam Bulgaru (192 WTA), Andreea Mitu (217 WTA), Mara Gae (1080 WTA), and Briana Szabo (922 WTA). In doubles, one wild card will go to the team of Jaqueline Cristian and Andreea Mitu, while the second will be announced before the tournament, as per WTA regulations requiring organizers to reserve a wild card for doubles players in the top 30.
Patrick Ciorcilă, director of the Transylvania Open WTA 250, said, “Transylvania Open is an extremely valuable tournament for Romanian tennis and for Romanian players who have the chance to play at home and earn points while enjoying the wonderful energy of the audience. The Romanian tennis fans showed us, especially in the last edition, how important it is to have players from the country on the court. It was extraordinary to see the support and emotion shared in the BTarena for Gabriela Ruse and all her fans who came to the match.”
He added, “Of course, the wild cards that came to us went to our players, and we are glad that this year we have Ana Bogdan, Jaqueline Cristian, Gabriela Ruse, and we welcome Anca Todoni, a young and promising player to the draw.
The tournament has four wild cards for the main draw, two that can be directly awarded and two that must be kept for the top 30 players who may decide to participate last minute. If there are no requests at that time, according to the official regulations, one will go to the first player in the qualifiers, and the fourth one to another Romanian player chosen by us. At this moment, Miriam Bulgaru could benefit from the fourth wild card. It would be a huge joy for us, especially after her good performance in the last edition, but it remains to be seen.”
