The main draw of Transylvania Open 2024: Former world number one Karolina Pliskova opens against a qualifier

Karolina Pliskova and Patrick Ciorcilă were present at the draw for the main draw of the Transylvania Open 2024, a highly attractive draw with several Romanian players – some making their debut in the Cluj tournament.

As usual, intriguing matches start right from the first round: Jaqueline Cristian and Miriam Bulgaru will face each other, tournament top seed Arantxa Rus will open against Greet Minnen, second seed Tatjana Maria will play against Zhuoxuan Bai, and Ana Bogdan faces a tough match against the powerful Alycia Parks.

Ana Bogdan had a challenging draw, while Karolina Pliskova had a relatively easy one. Beyond that, I believe we have the best draw in the competition’s history; most matches start with 50/50 chances. I am glad we have five Romanians in the first round, hoping for more to come from the qualifiers. One thing is for sure, with Jaqueline Cristian playing against Miriam Bulgaru, we are guaranteed to have a Romanian in the second round. Karolina is the star of the 2024 edition; I hope to have her in Cluj until the last days of the tournament,” said Patrick Ciorcilă, the director of Transylvania Open.

Regarding the chances of Romanian players, Patrick Ciorcilă stated:

“Every year we try to give someone else the chance to play at Transylvania Open. This year we have Anca Todoni, and there will be Andreea Mitu, who has never been with us in the main draw. It will be challenging for a Romanian to win now, the level is stronger, but our dream is to have a Romanian winner at Transylvania Open. The draws are much better now, since the new rule with only one WTA 250 tournament per week. We hope to keep the tournament in February; I like this period, and I hope to stay in this slot in the calendar.”

Karolina Pliskova, a former world number one, a player who has been at the top for many years, is the headliner of the current edition.

“If I play well, I believe I can beat anyone here. Every week I want to win, but there are good players everywhere, and every tournament is tough, taking it match by match,” said Karolina, who has fond memories of Cluj. “I won all three matches here in 2016 in the Fed Cup. It was a tough atmosphere; everyone in the Cluj arena was supporting Romania, but I was in very good form. I defeated both Simona Halep and Monica Niculescu; I won the doubles match as well.
