Transylvania Open Expands Its Commitment to Sustainability

Transylvania Open WTA 250, voted by players as the best WTA 250 tournament worldwide for two consecutive years (2022 and 2023), not only excels in promoting professional sports in Romania and organizing a top-tier global competition but also demonstrates a steadfast commitment to sustainability. The 2025 edition will introduce eco-friendly initiatives, reaffirming the tournament’s dedication to a greener future.

Eco-Friendly Transportation

All official cars provided by the mobility partner, Porsche, will be electric during the tournament. This initiative directly supports efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promotes eco-friendly alternatives for sports competitions. For Porsche, sustainability remains a core priority. The brand aims to deliver over 80% fully electric new vehicles by 2030, depending on customer demand and the development of electromobility in various regions worldwide. 2024 marked the company’s most significant product launch year, introducing four new models in Romania, including two electric models. The all-electric Taycan and Macan will comprise the tournament’s fleet this year.

Once again, we’re delighted to be the mobility partner for Transylvania Open. Our impressive fleet of 16 electric cars, Macan and Taycan, is ready to accompany players throughout the tournament,” said Adrian Pascu, Executive Director of Porsche Importer. “In May last year, we announced the investment in a second Porsche center in Romania, located right here in Cluj. Sustainability is our top priority, which is why the new showroom building has been designed to have a minimal environmental impact, earning a BREEAM Excellent certification,” he added. Porsche continues to champion e-mobility and sustainability with unwavering dedication.

Sustainable Hydration with La Fântâna

A key part of the sustainability efforts is the partnership with La Fântâna, the tournament’s official hydration partner. This year, players, coaches, staff, and volunteers will receive refillable stainless-steel bottles to use with La Fântâna dispensers, offering still water with a balanced mineral content. For spectators, all beverages during the 2025 edition will be served in paper cups, eliminating the use of plastic cups. This concrete step reflects the organizers’ commitment to significantly reducing environmental impact.

For La Fântâna, collaborating with Romania’s most important women’s tennis competition – Transylvania Open WTA 250 – is a source of pride and joy. First, the scale of such a complex event allows us to showcase La Fântâna’s strength as a leader in its field. Second, we are now in the fourth year of partnership with Transylvania Open, built on trust, shared values, and a mutual passion for top-level performance. We’re confident that the players and audience will appreciate what we’ve prepared,” said Gabriela Amza, Marketing Director of La Fântâna.

Reusable Materials and Local Solutions

A standout feature of Transylvania Open is the use of an impressive 3000 sqm curtain in BT Arena, Cluj-Napoca, to separate the venue into two courts. Made of fireproof and sound-absorbing materials, this curtain has been reused for every tournament since the first edition, contributing to waste reduction and efficient resource use, reinforcing the event’s sustainability commitment. The catering services also emphasize sourcing from local suppliers, supporting the regional economy while minimizing food transportation.

Education for a Greener Future

Throughout the tournament, educational campaigns will raise awareness about recycling and environmental protection. These initiatives will engage both the audience and participants, fostering positive behavioral changes.

Digital Solutions for Eco-Friendliness

All informational materials for players have been replaced with digital solutions. The event program and other tournament details are available exclusively online, significantly reducing paper consumption. Public information has also been partially moved to the event website and social media channels.
