Two Grand Slam winners on Transylvania Open’s Main Draw

Transylvania Open WTA250 2022

Barbora Krejcikova and Emma Raducanu are coming to Cluj

The entry deadline for Transylvania Open WTA250 (October 8-16, 2022) officially ended on September 12th with more than 30 players from WTA Top 100 joining the competition, including two Grand Slam winners: Barbora Krejcikova and Emma Raducanu.

Barbora Krejcikova is one of the spectacular names of this year’s edition. Grand Slam winner in Roland Garros 2021 and former World No. 2, Barbora is currently No. 26 in the WTA Singles ranking. She recently won the US Open doubles title alongside Katerina Siniakova. The two Czechs thus completed a much desired Career Golden Slam, by winning all four Grand Slams and also the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo. Last year they also won the WTA Finals in doubles.

Emma Raducanu is back on the Main Draw of our tournament, which will take place in the BT Arena. The 2021 US Open champion said she felt great at Transylvania Open’s first edition when she reached the quarter-finals. After a season full of valuable experiences, she is now ready for a fresh start.

Emma Raducanu: I had a really fun time last year in Cluj. The people were amazing and made me feel so, so welcome. So I‘m really excited and happy to say that I’m coming back again this year. Wherever I can, I love to go back to Romania, it’s where my dad came from and I have so many positive and happy memories from there. So I’m really looking forward to coming back, see you soon!”

Some of Romania’s best players are also present on Transylvania Open’s Main Draw. Irina Begu – World No. 33, Ana Bogdan – World No. 54, and Jaqueline Cristian – World No. 68 were the first to confirm they will be playing in the Cluj tournament.

Irina Begu is having one of her best seasons as she closes in to joining WTA Top 30. After a five-year “drought”, in 2022 she won two titles (her 5th and 6th), in Palermo and Bucharest. She also played a semifinal in St. Petersburg and reached the 4th round in Paris and third round in Wimbledon.

Ana Bogdan is having her best season so far: she reached her first WTA final, in Warsaw, and immediately got her first WTA title, at the Iași 125k tournament. Recently she played semifinals in WTA Portoroz 250k.

Jaqueline Cristian is coming back to Cluj after reaching the quarter-finals at TO’s first edition. From that moment she played her first WTA final, in Linz, and obtained her first ever win in a Grand Slam, but then she had to cope with a harsh knee injury, which forced her to stay away from tournaments. One of her main goals is to win her first WTA title.

Jaqueline Cristian: I hope you are ready to meet again at the second edition of the only WTA 250 tournament in Romania. I’m getting ready, Thomas, my coach, can confirm it… I’ve also got my cap ready and I can’t wait to play in front of my home crowd, which is clearly the best crowd. I really missed your energy last year, but I hope we can enjoy tennis together this year. Don’t forget: October 8-16, BT Arena, in Cluj.”

Transylvania Open WTA250 is back in Cluj after a first successful edition in 2021 when the tournament earned its place in WTA’s official schedule.

“We will have a very strong tournament, with high-ranked players who have exceeded our expectations. We are thrilled to welcome two Grand Slam winners, Barbora Krejcikova and Emma Raducanu, who is already tennis phenomenon at only 19 years old. We can‘t wait to see the Romanian players on the court, whether on the Main Draw or the Qualifying matches.

As you surely know, Transylvania Open is the only WTA250 tournament in Romania and we are proud to host it in Cluj-Napoca. Our competition offers the Romanian players a chance to enjoy the home crowd support and gives the public the opportunity to watch live many top athletes. For me and my team, the biggest joy is to have the tennis fans back in the stands. I’m sure that, thanks to the public, this tournament will become an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.”
Patrick Ciorcilă, tournament director

Transylvania Open is set to be held between October 8th and 16th, on hard court, in Cluj-Napoca’s BT Arena. There will be two courts: Central Court and Court no. 2. The tournament will begin with two days of qualifying matches, which will decide who takes the six spots for the Main Draw.

The first 21 ranked players, according to WTA, will directly enter TO’s Main Draw. Four Wild Cards and a Special Exempt (SE) were reserved for the Cluj tournament. Emma Raducanu and Jaqueline Cristian have received two of the Wild Cards and will directly enter the Main Draw.
