How was the 2023 season for Caroline Garcia?
After a fantastic 2022 season in which she played in four finals, won two major titles (WTA Finals, Cincinnati), reached her first Grand Slam semifinal, and climbed into the top 5 players in the world, Caroline Garcia faced a season where replicating the previous year’s success seemed more challenging. Nevertheless, Garcia maintains her spot in the WTA top 10 and has already reached two WTA finals in 2023 (in Lyon and Monterrey).
The defending champion of the WTA Finals, Garcia won’t be defending her title in Cancun. However, for several weeks, the Frenchwoman seems to be playing her best tennis again: she reached the semifinals in Guadalajara (WTA 1000), advanced to the quarterfinals in Tokyo (WTA 500) and Beijing (WTA 1000), where she was defeated in a hard-fought three-set match by Iga Swiatek, the world’s number one and the eventual winner in Beijing.
Playing Style
Caroline Garcia plays an aggressive style of tennis, primarily based on quick execution and a constant intention to stifle her opponent from the first shots. Her game relies on flat shots and consistently seeks to strike early to take away her opponents’ reaction time. You will see Caro advancing deep into the court on returns to meet the ball early, attacking vigorously on every short ball, and predominantly aiming to impose her aggressive and compact playing style.
Bigger Picture
Since her debut on the world tennis stage in 2012, Caroline Garcia has been viewed as a player with the potential to reach the top, even with the potential for Grand Slam titles or the world’s number one ranking. While she hasn’t reached those heights yet, she hasn’t been too far off (reaching world number 4 in the WTA rankings and the semifinals at a Grand Slam). Her career has progressed steadily, with its own rhythm, and she has, on many occasions, appeared unbeatable when playing freely without pressure.
Her presence in Cluj is a special opportunity to witness a world-class player of undeniable quality who is still in an important phase of her career.
