Impressive level: Xiyu Wang displays a terrific game, defeats Jaqueline Cristian to move into last 16

Xiyu Wang, World No. 59, has had a strong start at Transylvania Open. She ousted the local fans’ favorite Jaqueline Cristian in symmetrical sets: 6-3, 6-3.

The Romanian had her good moments, but Xiyu Wang displayed an impressive level of play. Considered a representative of the new wave, the young Chinese served flawlessly, didn’t offer Jaqueline not even a chance to break, and dominated the rallies with her great forehand – one of the most beautiful in the WTA circuit.

Xiyu, who is only 21, reminded us why she is to be followed. She is having a great season, which includes wins over Sakkari, Azarenka, and Krejcikova.

As for Jaqueline, who reached the quarterfinals at Transylvania Open’s first edition, it is clear she has to refind her rhythm after 8 months off the court, following her knee injury. Jaq reentered the circuit at US Open, and she then won the ITF 80K tournament in Le Neubourg (France), but she still lacks intense matches like the one today.

This match against Wang came too early for Jaqueline. Even so, she held on in many long rallies, and she looked to have improved her movement on the court. Still, it wasn’t enough against the inspired Xiyu Wang, who will play in round 2 against the winner between Gabi Ruse and Harmony Tan.
