Irina Begu withdraws from Transylvania Open

Today Irina Begu has withdrawn from Transylvania Open, the WTA 250 tournament starting this weekend in Cluj-Napoca. World No. 33, Irina can no longer play TO due to medical reasons.

After an excellent season, her best since 2014 in terms of victories number, Irina was hoping to get in Cluj the points that could bring her back in Top 30. This year she reached semifinals in Sankt Petersburg, fourth round in Roland Garros, and won two titles, Bucharest WTA 125K and Palermo WTA 250.

Last year Irina played in TO’s inaugural edition, but she lost in the first round to a fellow Romanian, Irina Bara. She managed though to reach semifinals in the doubles competition, together with Andreea Mitu.

Irina was replaced by Harriet Dart in the Singles Main Draw. Three more players have announced to withdraw from this edition – Sara Sorribes Tormo, Mayar Sherif and Alexandra Krunic. They were replaced by Xinyu Wang, Dalma Galfi and Varvara Gracheva, respectively.

Transylvania Open will take place between October 8th-16th in Cluj-Napoca’s BT Arena. 32 players will participate in the Singles competition, starting with Barbora Krejcikova, World No. 23 and Grand Slam winner. 280 WTA points are at stake and a total prize of $251,750.

The tournament begins Saturday with the qualifying matches.
