German Jule Niemeier confirmed her first-round win against No. 3 seed Ana Bogdan and is now in the quarterfinals of the Transylvania Open after defeating Russian Kamilla Rakhimova, 6-4, 6-4.
This is Niemeier’s third quarterfinal this season, after Wimbledon and Lausanne. She started the year outside WTA Top 100 and now she is close to Top 60.
Her match against Rakhimova had many long games and was more balanced than the scoresheet might suggest. Moreover, the Russian had a good period in the second set, coming back from 1-4 to 3-4 down.
Niemeier managed to win thanks to her good serve – 12 aces today -, and to her aggressive, steady game from the baseline. For her first semifinal this year she will meet Italian Paolini, who defeated her just last week, in Parma.
Jule Niemeier is through to the quarter finals, beats Kamilla Rakhimova 6-4, 6-4 to end the day 3 in Cluj.
Jule: "I am happy with the quarters, but not with my level today. I have a day off tomorrow and will try to see what didn't work today". #TO2022 pic.twitter.com/QkBRx0x93s
