Romanian Monica Niculescu and British Harriet Dart have won a beautiful doubles duel against Romanian pair Gabriela Ruse – Jaqueline Cristian. It was 6-4, 5-7, and 10-5 in the super tiebreak for Monica and Harriet, who proved more focused and more inspired and took the last seven points of the match.
With three Romanians on the court, this was one of the most expected matches on the first day of the tournament. And the fans could enjoy a game of really spectacular tennis: long rallies, great hits from both sides, score reversals and a lot of tension.
Monica and Harriet – who paired for the first time – were more careful through the final rallies: they came back from 3-5 in the super tiebreak, won seven consecutive points, and went on to round 2, where they might meet No. 3 seeds Dzalamidze & Panova.
