In spite of its short history, Transylvania Open is already proving to be an attraction point for top players and Grand Slam winners. After Simona Halep, Annet Kontaveit (at the first edition), and Emma Raducanu (who is coming back this year), we are now welcoming Barbora Krejcikova.
Here is what you need to know about her.
How was Barbora‘s season
Unlike 2021 – when she took Roland Garros, her first Grand Slam title in singles – this season brought Barbora several injuries, which forced her to stay off court for five months. Only recently things have begun to stabilize for her: first, she won US Open in doubles, pairing with Katerina Siniakova, then she got her first singles trophy of the season, in Tallin (WTA 250), which is also her only singles title after more than a year.
It was a significant success for Barbora, who defeated five top players: Ajla Tomljanovic, Marta Kostyuk, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Belinda Bencic, and Anett Kontaveit. Barbora’s victory in the final stopped Kontaveit’s winning streak of 24 indoor matches.
So the Czech is coming to Cluj not only highly motivated and looking for more points, but also in great form.
Playing style
Barbora’s tennis is a combination of creativity and efficiency. She displays a unique easiness when hitting the ball, when advancing to the net or when deciding to endpoints. Her style can be described as vintage tennis, but still very adapted: she can do serve-volley, but she also loves to build the point, she can juggle with special effects, but she can also win a match thanks to defense exclusively.
Maybe the most attractive aspect of her style is the unpredictability: one never knows what Barbora is about to do on the court, and what solution she will find in order to take the point.
Big picture
Krejcikova entered professional tennis as a very good doubles player. She then managed to transfer her success into the singles competition, becoming one of the most relevant players in the world, reaching World No. 2, and taking her first Grand Slam in singles, as we previously mentioned.
After that Paris triumph, she became one of the steadiest players in the circuit, reaching higher levels one tournament after the other. Now she seems to have overcome the injuries, regained her winning form, and looks like she is ready to return to Top 5.
For the public in BT Arena, it is an excellent opportunity to watch a true champion – winner of seven Grand Slam titles – and, moreover, a player who is capable of great performances on the court.
