
The fifth edition of Transylvania Open WTA 250 takes place from February 1-9 on a hard surface at BTarena in Cluj-Napoca. Romania’s most important women’s tennis tournament brings top 100 players, many Romanian players, including Simona Halep, and major upgrades that take the event to a new level.
Starting this year, the central court will feature the global standard of excellence in tennis officiating: the Foxtenn electronic line-calling system, allowing players to challenge umpire decisions electronically.
Main Draw: six Romanian players competing in front of home fans
The tournament starts on Saturday, February 1, with two days of qualifiers featuring five Romanian players. The main singles draw includes six Romanian players: Sorana Cîrstea and Irina-Camelia Begu, who qualified directly based on their WTA ranking, along with Simona Halep, Ana Bogdan, Gabriela Ruse, and Jaqueline Cristian, who received wild cards from the organizers.
Doubles: five Romanian players competing for the trophy
In the doubles draw, five Romanian players will fight for the title. Monica Niculescu, paired with Sabrina Santamaria (USA), entered directly. Additionally, two Romanian teams—Sorana Cîrstea / Irina-Camelia Begu and Simona Halep / Ana Bogdan—have received wild cards.
Qualifying rounds – the battle for a main draw spot
A total of 24 players ranked in the world’s top 180 will compete on February 1 and 2 for six spots in the main singles draw. Among them are five Romanian players: Anca Todoni, along with four wild card entrants—Miriam Bulgaru, Ilinca Amariei, Georgia Crăciun, and Briana Szabo.

Main Draw matches – Romanian stars take the court
Romania’s top-ranked player, Sorana Cîrstea, has confirmed her participation, and at 34 years old, this could be her last appearance in front of home fans after an impressive career.
Irina-Camelia Begu enters directly based on her WTA ranking. Four players received wild cards:
- Simona Halep, a former world No. 1 and one of Romania’s most beloved athletes, will play in front of fans in Cluj-Napoca for the first time. She previously played the 2021 final behind closed doors. Halep’s first singles match is scheduled for Tuesday, February 4.
- Ana Bogdan and Elena-Gabriela Ruse received wild cards and moved up from the qualifying stage.
- Jodie Burrage secured the final wild card as the highest-ranked player outside the direct entry cut-off.

More than tennis: Kids Zone, Premium Lounge & expanded Food & Drinks area
This year’s edition brings enhanced fan experiences. On Level 1 of BTarena, Kids Zone offers creative workshops and interactive activities for children aged 4 and up, allowing parents to enjoy the matches worry-free. Access is free.
For premium ticket holders, the BT Premium Lounge offers an exclusive space with fine wines and gourmet dishes. Other amenities include free cloakroom service, 30 locker units (first come, first served), and an expanded food & drinks area featuring a variety of options, from pizza and burgers to healthy meals.
A special attraction is the Transylvania Open Shop, showcasing official tournament merchandise and the official trophy, “The Flower of Infinity” by Malvensky, displayed at the entrance.
Tickets for Transylvania Open 2025
Tickets are available online at entertix.ro. New for this edition are Half-Day Tickets, valid for evening sessions (starting at 5:00 PM, Monday to Thursday). For the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final (Friday to Sunday), only Full-Day Tickets are available. As in previous years, entry to the qualifying matches is free, but a zero-value ticket is required, available online or at the BTarena ticket office.
