How was her season
Eugenie Bouchard tries to come back in WTA Top 100 after an 18-month period when she was forced to stay off the court because of several injuries. Before returning to the circuit – some weeks ago – she had never played any official match since March 2021. Hopefully, the hard times are over for her: since August she has already attended four tournaments. Her best result so far? Quarterfinals in Chennai (WTA 250).
Playing style
When she entered the WTA circuit, Genie was impressed with her execution speed and the way she was taking the ball very early, aiming for the opponent to not have enough time to respond. This feature still makes her a very tough competitor – even an irritating one, as she prefers to attack and rarely cedes initiative.
Throughout the years and especially after the injuries, her tennis lost clarity. She played very little, and her confidence seemed to vanish, but Genie remains a player who could provide very intense matches.
Big picture
After a series of trials and tribulations, the Canadian – former Top 5 player – is going through a reset. Fortunately, she is back in good health and able to focus on tennis. Coming to Cluj is an important chance for Genie to rebuild her trust and also her rankings.
