The player announces that this could be her last tournament played in front of the Romanian audience

Sorana Cîrstea, the highest-ranked Romanian player in the current WTA ranking, has announced her participation in the 2025 edition of the Transylvania Open WTA250, scheduled between February 1 and 9 at BTarena in Cluj-Napoca. At 34 years old, Sorana is one of the longest-standing active players in the WTA circuit, and this edition could be her final appearance in front of a Romanian audience. Currently ranked 69th in the WTA standings with 914 points, Sorana has inspired entire generations with her dedication and on-court achievements. The tournament in Cluj-Napoca represents an emotional moment and an opportunity for Romanian fans to celebrate and support her in one of her last matches played at home, in Romania.

Sorana Cîrstea: “I’m happy to announce that in February I will return to the Transylvania Open in Cluj. The 2025 season might be my last in the WTA circuit. I say ‘might’ because we’re never 100% sure what the future holds. That’s why I wanted so much to play one more tournament in Romania, and I’m happy to return to the court at the Transylvania Open in Cluj. I hope to see you there!”

Sorana Cîrstea, the best-ranked Romanian player in the world, returns to the 2025 Transylvania Open
Sorana Cîrstea made her professional debut at just 16 years old, and in her 18-year career, she has become one of Romania’s most beloved and appreciated tennis players. Sorana Cîrstea has two WTA singles titles, won in Istanbul (2021) and Tashkent (2008), as well as four finals, the most notable being the 2013 Toronto final (Canada Masters), where she defeated three Top 10 players before losing to Serena Williams, a performance that earned her a career-high ranking of WTA No. 21.

In doubles, Sorana has won five WTA titles, including Lugano 2019 alongside Andreea Mitu, and has played another five finals. Her highest doubles ranking was No. 35, achieved in 2009. Over the years, she has been a constant presence at Grand Slam tournaments, reaching the quarterfinals at Roland Garros (2009) and the US Open (2023), and the round of 16 at the Australian Open (2017 and 2022). Sorana is also proud of victories against Top 10 players like Jelena Janković, Anna Chakvetadze, Caroline Wozniacki, Francesca Schiavone, Sam Stosur, Vera Zvonareva, Marion Bartoli, Angelique Kerber, Petra Kvitová, Li Na, Sara Errani, Karolína Plíšková, Caroline Garcia, and Aryna Sabalenka.

Patrick Ciorcilă, director of the Transylvania Open WTA250 tournament: “Sorana Cîrstea’s presence at the 2025 edition of the Transylvania Open is a true privilege. Sorana is a symbol of Romanian tennis, and we are honored to host, probably, her last tournament in Romania. Alongside the other confirmed Romanian players, her presence at the 2025 edition will turn our tournament into an emotional spectacle for Romanian tennis fans.”

A strong presence of Romanian tennis at the 2025 Transylvania Open
Besides Sorana Cîrstea, other important names in Romanian tennis will be present at the 2025 Transylvania Open: Jaqueline Cristian (WTA No. 85, 832 points), who continues to climb the world rankings and is currently Romania’s third-best-ranked player. Alongside her, Ana Bogdan (WTA No. 114, 653 points), finalist of the last edition of the tournament, returns to Cluj-Napoca, strengthening her consistent presence in the competition. They will be joined by Gabriela Ruse and Simona Halep, Romania’s most beloved tennis player of all time.
