Transylvania Open WTA 250 is back in February 2024!

“Tennis is BACK in Cluj! Much sooner than we would have thought a year ago. The Transylvania Open has secured a new position in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) calendar and returns to the BT Arena in less than five months since the conclusion of the last edition. Thus, the fourth edition of the tournament will take place from February 3-11, 2024, at the beginning of the competition season, immediately following the Linz Open, the WTA500 tournament in Austria. This change gives the tournament a more advantageous position, with high chances of attracting even more prominent names in the world of women’s tennis.

Patrick Ciorcilă, director of Transylvania Open WTA 250:The change in the timing of the Transylvania Open, from autumn to winter, is an important step for us. It’s a strategic move, and we are extremely happy to have implemented it. By placing ourselves at the beginning of the calendar, after the Australian Open, we will be among the first tournaments in the circuit, increasing our chances of bringing valuable players to Cluj. By scheduling the event after other competitions in the same region, we provide players with the opportunity to continue the series of tournaments in Europe. Additionally, at the beginning of the year, players are in better shape and determined to accumulate as many points as possible to secure a strong position in the rankings. We hope to maintain this advantageous position in the future.

Transylvania Open – 3 successful editions

The three previous editions of the Transylvania Open WTA 250 were organized in October, before the WTA Finals. In 2022, Transylvania Open was voted by players as the best WTA 250 tennis tournament in the world. The 2023 tournament took place from October 16-22 and was equally spectacular. The singles trophy was won by Tamara Korpatsch. The young German player secured her first WTA 250 title in Cluj after a final match against Gabriela Ruse. The doubles champions were Jodie Burrage and Jil Teichmann. For Gabriela Ruse, the tournament in Cluj marked the beginning of a series of victories in the Billie Jean King Cup. Alongside Jaqueline Cristian, Anca Todoni, and Horia Tecău, she brought victory to Romania against Serbia.

Transylvania Open WTA 250 in 2023 meant 9 days of tennis, including 2 qualifying days, with matches played on the two tennis courts set up in the BT Arena. Players had access to 2 additional training courts. During the matches, 3600 tennis balls were used. Special logistics work, including the installation of 3000 sqm of sound-absorbing and fire-resistant curtains, was required for setting up the two playing courts by separating the versatile hall. Over 800 people worked on organizing the tournament, and the budget reached 1.5 million euros.”
