Transylvania Open and Kaufland Romania launch Open Heart – a campaign dedicated to heart health

Transylvania Open, together with Kaufland Romania, is launching an initiative dedicated to heart health. Between January 31 and February 7, throughout the international women’s tennis tournament, the Open Heart campaign will take place — an education and prevention initiative focused on cardiovascular diseases, created for the general public and offering free consultations. An ambulance staffed by cardiologists and specialized medical personnel will be located on the esplanade in front of BTarena.

The medical checks will include:

  • electrocardiograms (ECG/EKG);
  • clinical consultations;
  • cardiac ultrasounds (echocardiograms), where necessary.

Mirel Alexa, Executive Director of Transylvania Open WTA 250:
“Transylvania Open takes place every year in February — the month of love, a time when we often speak about the heart in a symbolic sense. With Open Heart, we wanted to use this powerful symbol in a literal way as well — to draw attention to one of Romania’s most pressing health issues: cardiovascular disease. Transylvania Open is more than a sports event; it is a platform that can drive real change. Through this campaign, we aim to make prevention more accessible and to contribute, even modestly, to a healthier future.”

The campaign addresses a serious public health challenge: according to Eurostat, Romania ranks first in Europe for mortality caused by cardiovascular diseases, with a rate approximately 2.5 times higher than the EU average. In addition, more than half of all deaths in Romania in recent years were caused by cardiovascular diseases, accounting for roughly 56% of total deaths, according to the latest European Commission report on the State of Health in the EU.

“Health is a key pillar of Kaufland’s social responsibility strategy, and the worrying statistics regarding cardiovascular disease in Romania have led us to join the Open Heart project. We believe that world-class sport at Transylvania Open can go hand in hand with health education and easy access to prevention. In a country where the mortality rate caused by heart disease is far above the EU average, our role is to turn public dialogue into action — by offering people the resources they need to check their health quickly and free of charge, right at the heart of a world-class sporting event.”
Katharina Scheidereiter, CSR Manager, Kaufland Romania

The Open Heart campaign is open to everyone — not only to those who have tickets to the tennis tournament — and aims to:

  • provide free access to basic cardiology consultations;
  • encourage education, prevention, and regular check-ups;
  • promote the importance of heart health in sport and everyday life.

Consultations will take approximately 20 minutes, and visitors will be received based on a prior appointment made on the tournament’s official website: openheart.transylvaniaopen.ro/. Appointments can also be made on site, directly at the Open Heart ambulance located at BTarena.
