Jaqueline Cristian and Lucrezia Stefanini delivered the match of the day at the Transylvania Open. After more than two hours of superb tennis, Jaqueline — generously supported by the Cluj crowd — secured a three-set victory: 6–2, 2–6, 7–5.
The first two sets unfolded almost like mirror images of each other, not only in the scoreline but also in the way the two players performed. Jaqueline clearly dominated the opening set, while in the second, Stefanini was tactically flawless, taking and maintaining the initiative and forcing Jaqueline into long, grueling rallies.
For a player like Stefanini, who hits with two hands on both wings, including the forehand, rhythm is crucial. The faster the ball comes to her, the more comfortable she feels and the easier it is for her to redirect shots. As long as Jaqueline played a more linear game, Stefanini was able to dictate, stay in control of the match, and give the impression that she could reach every ball, accelerate at will, and find the winning shot whenever needed.
The turning point came when Jaqueline adjusted her tactics and began using heavier topspin, varying the height and spin of her shots. Stefanini no longer felt as comfortable and was forced into a position where she had to construct points and lead her own attacks, rather than simply feeding off her opponent’s pace.
This tactical shift simplified the match for Jaqueline, but Stefanini continued to fight heroically. She chased down every ball, produced impeccable stretches of play, and came within a single game of victory at 5–4 in the deciding set, when Cristian was serving to stay in the match.
Jaqueline’s greatest merit in this match was her response under pressure. With her back against the wall, she reminded herself of her true value as a player and raised her level. From 4–5 down, she played with remarkable intensity and precision, broke back, and secured a very important win.

“It was a very tough match (laughs). It really was a very tough match. It’s never easy to start your tournament at home. Even though I started the match very well, my opponent raised her level tremendously. I made a few small mistakes — nothing major — but she took her chances, and I let her into the match. After that, the mental part came into play. That’s what I’m most proud of today: it was a continuous battle, a very high level of tennis, a very physical match, where I managed to stay strong. I’m very happy and confident for the next round,” Jaqueline said at the post-match press conference.
“I managed to take the match to victory point by point. I tried to reset after every point, not to play the score, but to focus only on myself, on the ball, on the things I had to do, to stay positive and believe in myself until the very last point. I felt good physically, I felt that I could stay there — even at 7–5 in the deciding set — without any problem. The crowd mattered enormously because they really pushed me, made me stay there, and believed, to truly play with my heart. That was the emotion I felt on court today.”
