Transylvania Open 2025, PREVIEW: six Romanian players, a strong main draw and exciting matches from day one

With six Romanian players in the main draw, including Simona Halep, and many other fit competitors—among them the 2022 champion—the 2025 Transylvania Open main draw looks very good! Even more so, as we’re in for high-stakes matches right from the opening days.

Whichever way you look at this fifth edition of the Transylvania Open, the tournament brings several compelling storylines. First and foremost, Simona Halep’s return to Cluj. A finalist in the 2021 edition, Simona is making her comeback to a WTA tournament after nearly four months since her last match on tour (played in Hong Kong at the end of October).
Additionally, nearly all of Romania’s top players are competing in Cluj, making TO2025 a truly historic event: featuring representatives from the last three-four generations of Romanian tennis.
Lastly, the tournament has an exceptionally strong main draw, as the top-seeded players have arrived in Cluj playing some of their best tennis.

Simona Halep’s Return

Simona Halep returns to Cluj for the first time since 2021, when she reached the final. She will play her first official WTA match since October 2024. Her comeback raises many questions, but there’s also a lot of excitement from seeing her compete again in Romania after such a long break.

Her first-round opponent is the Italian player Lucia Bronzetti, currently ranked No. 66 in the world. This will be their first-ever encounter, and it promises to be a tightly contested battle: Bronzetti arrives in Cluj following a strong Australian Open campaign, where she defeated Victoria Azarenka in the first round. Unlike Halep, Bronzetti has match rhythm and confidence on her side. The Italian is an extremely tenacious player, known for fighting for every ball, which guarantees a high-intensity showdown on Tuesday evening. The winner of this match will face either Peyton Stearns or Varvara Gracheva in the next round and in this section of the main draw are No. 5 seed Katerina Siniakova and Caroline Dolehide.

Top Seeds

As in previous editions, Transylvania Open 2025 features several top-tier players. This year’s top seed is Anastasia Potapova, ranked No. 33 in the world. Potapova has started the season strong, reaching the quarterfinals in both Brisbane and Linz. Her first opponent in Cluj will be Julia Grabher. If she wins, she will face the winner of the Arantxa Rus vs. Viktorija Golubic match—a must-watch clash between two creative, versatile players. In the same section of the main draw is Anna Blinkova, the 2022 champion, who remains a dangerous contender, regardless of seeding.

The tournament’s No. 2 seed is Olga Danilovic, arguably the most fit player in Cluj. Ranked No. 41 WTA, Danilovic has won 16 of her last 20 matches since October. She arrives in Cluj fresh off a breakthrough run to the Australian Open fourth round and will be a player to watch closely. Her first-round match against Alycia Parks is a real test and one of the strongest opening-round encounters. Danilovic’s section of the main draw includes Mayar Sherif, Caroline Dolehide, Katerina Siniakova, and Simona Halep.

Other seeds in Cluj this year include Peyton Stearns, Anhelina Kalinina, Katerina Siniakova, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, Elisabetta Cocciaretto, and Jaqueline Cristian. Many of these players have significant WTA experience; some, like Stearns, are hard-court specialists, while others mix defensive skills with well-structured, tactical tennis. Each of them has a chance to go deep in the tournament.

Beyond the top seeds, the main draw features several players known for their entertaining tennis: Anna Blinkova, Laura Siegemund, Caroline Dolehide, and Alycia Parks. These players can be extremely dangerous opponents when playing their best tennis.

Six Romanian Players on the Main Draw

Simona Halep, Sorana Cîrstea, Irina Begu, Jaqueline Cristian, Gabriela Ruse, and Ana Bogdan will perform on the main draw of the 2025 Transylvania Open. For the first time in the tournament’s five-year history, Romania’s top-ranked players are all competing in the same home event. This creates a truly special storyline, offering Romanian tennis fans a rare opportunity to see all six of them in action at the same time, especially as some are approaching the later stages of their careers.

While Simona Halep faces a tough opening test against Lucia Bronzetti, the other Romanians have a relatively balanced draw. Sorana Cîrstea will take on qualifier Marina Stakusic, currently ranked No. 118 WTA, in their first-ever meeting. Jaqueline Cristian, the No. 8 seed, will also face a qualifier. It remains to be seen if Jaqueline can maintain her strong form from Australia, where she reached the third round in Melbourne—a premiere in her career.

In the same section of the main draw as Sorana and Jaqueline is Gabriela Ruse, who has a tough opening-round matchup against No. 4 seed Anhelina Kalinina. The two players have met twice before, with their head-to-head record tied at 1-1.

A potential all-Romanian second-round clash is also on the table. If both Irina Begu and Ana Bogdan win their opening matches, they will face off in the second round. Irina Begu is set to meet No. 7 seed Elisabetta Cocciaretto, while Ana Bogdan will take on Jodie Burrage. If they both advance, it would mark their third career meeting, with Bogdan having won the previous two.
