Transylvania Open 2026 officially began with Friday evening’s main draw ceremony and the first qualifying matches on Saturday morning. But the buzz around the tournament and the energy at BT Arena had started days earlier, as this edition comes with a great deal of anticipation.
And for good reason. This year’s edition brings multiple storylines and just as many promises. On one hand, there are strong chances for a Romanian player to go deep into the tournament: Jaqueline Cristian, Sorana Cîrstea, and Gabriela Ruse are all in excellent form. On the other hand, the draw features established names, spectacular players, and athletes already familiar with success in Cluj.
Moreover, the Transylvania Open — consistently ranked among the most beloved tournaments on the WTA circuit — continues to innovate and invest so that the experience for both players and fans attending the event (January 31 – February 7) is truly memorable. Here’s what Transylvania Open 2026 has to offer:
Sorana Cîrstea, her final appearance in Cluj
Sorana Cîrstea has announced that this will be her final season, with retirement set for the end of 2026. This means this will be her last appearance in Cluj. It’s a special occasion for both the fans and Sorana to bid a proper farewell to those who have followed her journey over the years. It will, undoubtedly, be emotional.
And because Sorana (currently ranked No. 36 WTA) is at a point in her career where she has nothing left to prove, it wouldn’t be surprising to see her play here with a freedom that makes her very difficult to stop.
Emma Răducanu, Karolína Plíšková, and Ana Bogdan are chasing a return to their special level
Perhaps more than ever, the Transylvania Open entry list includes a group of spectacular players eager to rediscover the tennis that once thrilled us — including here in Cluj.
For Emma Răducanu, this is her second appearance at the Transylvania Open. Returning to a place where she enjoys strong crowd support could mark the beginning of a new phase where all the pieces of her game fall back into place. And when Răducanu reaches that level of precision and intensity, her tennis is a true delight to watch.
Karolína Plíšková’s situation is more complex. The 2024 Transylvania Open champion went through a mixed period after lifting the trophy, followed by a long injury break. She hadn’t played an official match since the 2024 US Open until her recent return at the Australian Open, where she reached the third round — an impressive result given the lack of match play. A hugely talented player and very popular in Romania, especially in Cluj, Plíšková could once again go far here.
Ana Bogdan has a similar story. In the summer of 2025, she decided to take an indefinite break from tennis to focus on her health and regain balance. After more than six months away, Ana returns to competition here in Cluj for her first tournament since June 2025. It will be fascinating to see how she feels after such a long pause and how much this event helps her reconnect with her usual level.
Eyes on Gabriela Ruse and Jaqueline Cristian
Both Gabriela Ruse and Jaqueline Cristian have grown tremendously over the past year — in experience, confidence, and clarity about their path. They have crossed important thresholds, defeated top players, and are currently in the best form of their careers.
Ruse arrives in Cluj after an excellent start to the season, coming through qualifying into the main draws at Brisbane and Adelaide, and reaching the third round of the Australian Open for the first time after wins over Yastremska and Tomljanović.
On the other side, Jaqueline Cristian is now the highest-ranked Romanian player (No. 35 WTA) and began the year with a quarterfinal run in Adelaide (also from qualifying), defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova (No. 11 WTA) and Daria Kasatkina. These are remarkable results, and it will be exciting to see how far they can go in Cluj.
What the singles draw offers
Top seed Emma Răducanu faces Greet Minnen in the first round, a talented and unpredictable player. With a win, Răducanu could meet Romanian rising star Ruxandra Bertea (who plays Kaja Juvan). Just 19 years old, Bertea recently broke into the Top 300 after being ranked outside the Top 700 a year ago. She played six ITF finals last year and debuted for Romania’s Billie Jean King Cup team.
In the same section of the draw are Ana Bogdan, who starts against a qualifier and could face Olga Danilović or Miriam Bulgaru next, potentially meeting Gabriela Ruse later. Ruse herself has a tough opener against Rebeka Masarova and could meet fourth seed Wang Xinyu in the second round.
In the bottom half, second seed Jaqueline Cristian opens against a qualifier and could face Rakotomanga Tiantsoa next. This section also includes third seed Sorana Cîrstea, who starts against Rakhimova, and defending champion Anastasia Potapova (seeded fifth), who opens against Lucia Bronzetti.
Karolína Plíšková, unseeded, begins against Zakharova and could meet Potapova in the second round.
Must-watch first round matches:
Răducanu vs. Minnen, Bulgaru vs. Danilović, Ruse vs. Masarova.
