TO, day 1, recap | Ana Bogdan starts the Transylvania Open with a win, passes Alycia Parks in the match of the day; Anna Blinkova remains undefeated in Cluj

Ana Bogdan debuts with a victory at the Transylvania Open tournament, after passing in two tight sets, 7-5, 7-5, against Alycia Parks, ranked this week in the 110th place.

The favorite 8 of this edition at the Transylvania Open, Ana Bogdan, defeats Parks for the second time in a row, after last year at Wimbledon when she defeated the American player after three sets.

As expected, the match was a balanced one, and Ana had serious work to do in front of an uncomfortable opponent, who plays aggressive tennis, based on a lot of strength.

The tie was broken at 6-5 in the first set when Parks served to stay in the set. Bogdan won that game to zero, ran away with the set – and from that moment everything became clearer for Ana. With the first set that she won, Ana hit better, more freely and with more accuracy, while Parks increased the number of errors. However, Parks did not give up easily. The American player came back from 0-4 and 3-5 down in the second set to level at 5-5, when Ana put her foot down and didn’t let her opponent go along with her comeback. In an important moment, Bogdan regrouped, broke at 5-5 and finally achieved the victory after a game accomplished on her serve.

For a new qualification in the quarter-finals at Cluj, Ana will have to overcome the winner from the Anca Todoni – Erika Andreeva match.

What else happened on the first day at the Transylvania Open

Anna Blinkova reaches 8 consecutive victories in Cluj. Anna Blinkova, the champion from 2022, returned to Cluj with triumph, after she decisively passed Simona Waltert. Blinkova, who was in the spotlight at the beginning of this year after the huge victory achieved against Elena Rybakina at the Australian Open, is the player to pay attention to this year in Cluj: she is in shape, plays solid and clean tennis and, most importantly, she feels good to be at the Transylvania Open, a tournament that she won in 2022, coming from the qualifications.

The next opponent for Blinkova will be Nuria Parrizas-Diaz, who achieved an important victory today, during the match against Laura Siegemund. Parrizas-Diaz, who had not won a main draw match at a WTA or Grand Slam tournament since October 2023, cruised past the German player in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Clara Tauson continues to be in good shape at Cluj. Last week, at the Linz tournament, Tauson was the only player to take a set from Jelena Ostapenko, and she even had match points against the Latvian. In the end, the Dane player was defeated by Ostapenko in the decisive tiebreak set in the eighth-finals, with Ostapenko eventually winning the trophy. A week later, in Cluj, Tauson starts with a dominant victory, confirming the good period that she is going through 6-3, 6-1 with Nadia Podoroska, the 9th favorite.
