Jaqueline Cristian qualifies for the second time in the quarters of the Transylvania Open tournament, after a great victory against Clara Tauson. Jaqueline prevailed in front of the Dane with 6-4, 6-0, taking her revenge for the defeat suffered at Linz, one week ago (6-2, 6-0). Jaqueline has played before in the quarters at Cluj (in 2021), when she was eliminated by Simona Halep.
Following this result, Jaqueline will climb, starting on Monday, approximately 10 places in the WTA ranking, up to at least the 73rd place.
Unlike their meeting a week ago in Linz, when Tauson won decisively, this time the scenario was reversed: Jaqueline dominated, set the pace and never let loose her opponent, who also appeared to have physical problems – she requested the intervention of the physiotherapist three times.
“I really wished to take my revenge after the defeat at Linz. She is a solid player, and actually a very good person, I played against her a few times, we know each other pretty well. This time I had a clearer mind, and the fact that I played this match in Cluj made the difference.” declared Jaqueline Cristian after the match.
For the semifinal qualification, Jaqueline will meet Anastasija Sevastova, an atypical player, one that is completely different from everyone she met in Cluj until now. The two of them never met until now.
Anastasija Sevastova is playing again in a WTA quarter-final, after almost 3 years
Anastasija Sevastova recently returned to the WTA circuit after a 2 year break – a period during which she became a mother -, qualified in her first WTA quarter since 2021 (Eastbourne). Sevastova went through an exhausting match, during which she had a bit of everything – a lot of quality, rebounds, saved match points, forehands – by Elina Avanesyan, the 6th favorite of the tournament. The match lasted for 2 hours and ended with Avanesyan’s withdrawal in the second set, when she was lead with 2-0.
Sevastova, present on the main draw at Cluj, due to the protected ranking, continues her comeback started in December 2023. This is only the third tournament that she has been playing since her tennis comeback. During all three tournaments, the Latvian managed to reach at least the quarter-finals. So following this result, she will climb over 200 places in the WTA ranking (up to around the 480th place).
Sara Errani and Karolina Pliskova will meet in the TO quarters
Sara Errani won decisively, with 6-0, 6-1, against Tatjana Maria, the 2nd favorite of the tournament, after a match during which she continued her dominance over the German player, whom she defeated the 5th time in the same number of matches. This is, again, a clear proof of how much the matchup matters: Tatjana’s tennis balls suit Sara very well.
This victory is one of the clearest that the Italian has achieved in the last years – years which were extremely hard for Errani, since she was forced to start from scratch after her 2017 doping ban. In fact, with this victory, Errani qualifies for her first WTA quarter-final since 2021 (Hamburg).
In the next round, Sara Errani, former finalist at Roland Garros (in 2012, her peak year), will meet with Karolina Pliskova.
The former tennis world leader, Karolina Pliskova played in a very convincing way during the last match on the Central Court, winning in two sets (6-2, 6-1) against Maria Camila Osorio, an uncomfortable player, who today, however, didn’t find an explication regarding the strong and clean shots of the Czech player.
Sara Errani and Karolina Pliskova met twice until now, each of them having one win.
