Transylvania Open, the 2023 edition, is officially confirmed!

It’s official: Transylvania Open, the only WTA250 tournament in Romania, is returning this autumn with a new edition, the third in the tournament’s history. The competition will take place at BT Arena in Cluj, between October 14-22, and Early Bird tickets are available here.

Transylvania Open made its debut in 2021, with Anett Kontaveit becoming the first champion, while Anna Blinkova won the second edition. The organizational efforts and initiatives were rewarded in 2022 when the players voted the Cluj tournament as the best in the world in the WTA250 category.

This autumn’s edition will take place in the very last week of the regular season in the WTA circuit, preceding the WTA Finals. Romanian fans will have the opportunity to witness the best Romanian players and some of the top 100 WTA players in action at the only indoor tournament in Europe this autumn.

Sorana Cîrstea is the first major addition to the Transylvania Open. With two WTA titles to her name and a career-high ranking of 21 in the world, Sorana will be making her debut at TO.

Alongside her, other Romanian players are expected to compete, such as Ana Bogdan and Jaqueline Cristian.

Patrick Ciorcilă, Transylvania Open WTA250 Director, said, “We are more than happy to enjoy Transylvania Open again this year. We fought hard to keep this tournament in Cluj because initially, WTA officials announced the return of tournaments in China to the competition calendar. And that would have ended the story of a competition that has enjoyed great success, both from the audience and the players, who have designated us as the best WTA 250 tournament in the world. All these appreciations motivated us, and in the end, we managed to find a solution to continue. So, we are expecting Romanian tennis fans in large numbers in Cluj at Transylvania Open, from October 16-22. Especially since we have valuable players from our country who have already announced their participation in the tournament: Sorana Cîrstea, Ana Bogdan, and Jaqueline Cristian. We are looking forward to another strong competition and a magical tournament.”

Steve Simon, WTA Chairman and CEO: ”The Transylvania Open in just three short years has established itself as a favorite among players and tennis fans, and we are delighted to welcome it back to the Hologic WTA Tour in 2023. Being voted as the WTA 250 Tournament of the Year in 2022 was a testament to Cluj-Napoca’s excellent organization and staff, all of which will be on display again this October to deliver a world-class tournament.”
